NEW ORLEANS — Ole Miss football quarterback Trinidad Chambliss wanted to do more than just win the Sugar Bowl and advance to the CFP semifinals. He also wanted to earn redemption.

In the Rebels (13-1) regular-season loss to Georgia (12-2) on Oct. 18, their scoreless fourth quarter contributed heavily. The Rebels scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to win 39-34 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 1.

Chambliss completed 30 of 46 passes for a season-high 362 yards and two touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl.

In the fourth quarter, he was 7-for-12 for 127 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Wallace III and a two-point conversion, an improvement from his 1 yard on 1-for-10 passing in the fourth quarter against Georgia previously.

“My emotions right now, it’s crazy right now,” Chambliss said. “Really speechless, honestly, about everything. … Obviously, played them before. I didn’t play my best in the fourth quarter, so I wanted to redeem myself and get back again.”

Ole Misswill face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, on Jan. 8 (6:30 p.m. CT, ESPN) for a spot in the CFP championship game. If they win the Fiesta Bowl, they will face the winner of the Peach Bowl between Indiana and Oregon in Miami on Jan. 19 in the national championship.

Chambliss completed four passes that went for over 35 yards. He completed 12 passes in a row to begin the second half and didn’t throw an incompletion in the third quarter. Chambliss’ first three plays of the fourth quarter required him to scramble outside of the pocket and evade pressure before finding an open receiver while on the run.

His 40-yard pass to De’Zhaun Stribling with 26 seconds left in the game helped set up Lucas Carneiro’s game-winning 47-yard field goal.

“He’s been great,” Wallace said of Chambliss. “He has a great arm, and he can also run, so that makes it hard for the defense. Kind of like a two-headed monster, he’s good at both things. So, really just him scrambling around, making plays, it just kept us explosive.”

Update on Trinidad Chambliss NCAA waiver

Chambliss mentioned that he still has yet to hear back from the NCAA on his waiver requesting an additional year of eligibility. He is seeking a retroactive medical redshirt for the 2022 season, which he spent at Division II Ferris State.

“I think the NCAA is closed right now,” Chambliss said. “I’m pretty sure they open (Jan. 2), so hopefully we hear an answer soon.”
