Why There Is No Reason To Be Concerned About Kansas State QB Avery Johnson's Play

Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson experienced the highs and lows of being a high-profile football player Saturday.
He threw three touchdowns in a 34-7 victory against the Washington State Cougars at Bill Snyder Family Stadium but also had two interceptions. One of them was returned 50 yards for a touchdown that was the only thing that prevented the Wildcats defense from getting the shutout.
Still, there is no reason for concern about Johnson's play. In fact, his biggest supporter, first-year coach Collin Klein, is always in his corner. Johnson said Klein helped him rebound from the bad throw that resulted in a touchdown just before halftime.
"But I mean, he helped me out, he reassured me," Johnson said of Klein. "He told me I was doing some things well on third down, doing some things with my feet pretty well, and I still had a whole other half of football to play. So I've thrown interceptions before, it's not new to me."
The Wildcats want to do everything possible to keep Johnson from losing confidence this season. They need him feeling comfortable as possible in the huddle. Some feel that's where things went wrong last season. After a strong sophomore season in his first year as the starter, Johnson struggled with consistency as a junior. His numbers dropped across the board.
It led the Wildcats finishing a disappointing 6-6 in a year full of huge expectations. With Klein in charge, it just seems Johnson has regained his swagger. He looked more like the player who arrived in Manhattan with so much fanfare.
The Wildcats are going to need every bit of Johnson's talents if they are going to compete for a Big 12 championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff. For the most part, it's hard to be upset about the way he has played thus far. The offense has scored 105 points in the first two games, with Johnson accounting for six passing touchdowns and one rushing.
Hopefully, his confidence remains high despite the two bad throws on Saturday against the Cougars.
