For the first time in 23 years, the Wicomico high school football team is on its way to an MPSSAA state semifinal after defeating Winters Mill 30-7 at home Friday night, Nov. 21.
Things were close in the first half, with Wi-Hi leading by just two points after two quarters. But a big second half, led by two touchdowns and an interception by Aaron Sadberry, carried Wi-Hi to victory and a spot in the Class 2A state semifinal.
Here is how things unfolded at Wicomico County Stadium during Wi-Hi’s state quarterfinal victory on Friday:
How it happened
- Wi-Hi was the first to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter, with quarterback Landon Roache connecting with Tay’Shaun Swann on a deep touchdown pass to give it an early 6-0 lead.
- Winters Mill would respond to take the lead, scoring one the ground from the 1-yard line after a successful fake punt put the Falcons into scoring position. Wi-Hi retook the lead shortly after, with kicker Rowen Okerblom kicking a field goal to give it a 9-7 lead heading into halftime.
- The second half was all Wi-Hi, and the star was Aaron Sadberry. He caught an interception in the third quarter, followed it up on offense with a touchdown, as Roache found Sadberry wide open in the end zone. Sadberry also returned a punt for a touchdown, giving Wi-Hi a 23-7 lead.
- The last TD of the game belonged to Wi-Hi running back Braeden Stevenson, who ran one in to make it 30-7 for the final score.
Player of the Game
After a tight first half, it looked like the quarterfinal game between Wi-Hi and Winters Mill would be a close, down-to-the-wire battle. But Aaron Sadberry’s playmaking changed that in the second half.
Sadberry was able to make an impact on the game on offense, defense and special teams. His third quarter interception led to his touchdown catch that extended Wi-Hi’s lead. And his punt return for a touchdown effectively put the game out of reach, and Wi-Hi are now on their way to a Class 2A state semifinal.
What it mean’s and what’s next for Wi-Hi
Wi-Hi has reached its first state semifinal since 2002, and is now just two wins away from capturing a Class 2A State Championship.
Wi-Hi will be on the road next week in the 2A semifinals, making the trip across the Bay Bridge to face Huntingtown with a spot in the state title game on the line. Bayside South football fans will remember Huntingtown as the team that faced Stephen Decatur in the last two Class 2A State Championship Games in 2023 and 2024.
