Will Jaguars' Breakout WR Washington Play Special Teams?

Parker Washington continues to be the talk of the Jacksonville Jaguars' training camp. 

Whether its about his steadily consistent work habits or continued connection with starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Washington looks like he is destined to become a household name this season.

But, one question that remains is whether Washington will continue to have a significant role on special teams, as he was dynamic as a punt returner last season.

Washington recorded 58 receptions for 847 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2025, adding an additional 341 yards and two scores on punt returns.

"We have a bunch of guys that can do it," special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said at training camp.

Farwell said while he would "love" Washington to be the guy fielding punts, Jacksonville does have other options in Josh Cameron and Austin Trammell.

Cameron has turned heads at training camp, while Trammell has "made a career" of returning kicks and punts, according to Farwell.

Washington's development as a pass catcher is noticeable through camp, as Big Cat Country reporter Gus Logue called him "unguardable."

Continued contract negotiations have been had about an extension for the former Penn State standout, but for now, he is in line to play out the final year of his rookie deal.

If he continues this momentous camp, it may be smart to lock in his deal now before he has the opportunity to increase his value with another strong season.

Lawrence clearly is connected with him, and Washington has expressed his appreciation for the franchise taking a chance on him coming out of Penn State.

This offseason, both Brian Thomas Jr. and Washington have been a popular topic of discussion for members of the team and staff, as they have noticed growth and continuity between the two pass catchers and their quarterback.

"I texted Parker last week… and he was like, ‘I’m ready to kill,’" head coach Liam Coen told Action Sports Jacksonville on Tuesday. "That's all I need to hear from him."

Washington has also been hailed as one of the most hardworking players on the squad, with former Heisman winning two-way player Travis Hunter saying he has been trying to beat everyone to the facility, except for Washington.

Coen seconded these remarks, saying that his fourth-year wideout is almost always the player showing up earliest for extra work and preparation.

Washington, while projected to be Jacksonville's WR2 behind Thomas, gives Coen a lot more versatility than others in the room, having played the slot, X, and on the outside.

Adding him to the punting unit would only increase his value and give opposing defenses another aspect of his game to gameplan for.
