New Penn State head coach Matt Campbell is working to fill spots on his coaching and football staff with a blend of familiar faces from his time at Iowa State and current Penn State staff members and assistants, many with ties to the Nittany Lions football program. The roster is also adding some new faces to the program in the recruiting process, with a handful of flips from Iowa State’s Class of 2026 previously recruited by Campbell. And if internet speculation is any indication, Penn State could soon add some key players from Iowa State’s 2025 roster. Among the new names expected to be available is experienced starting quarterback Rocco Becht.

Becht is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens in a couple of weeks, and Penn State is believed to be a strong candidate to land his transfer commitment. Becht’s close ties to Campbell and members of the new Penn State coaching staff make a move to Happy Valley a logical expectation. However, Becht will be viewed as an attractive transfer quarterback who could help a number of teams this offseason, so Penn State will not be the only option on the table for Becht.

With Drew Allar having his eligibility expiring, Penn State’s quarterback position is worth monitoring under Campbell in 2026. Ethan Grunkemeyer has filled in for the injured Allar for the second half of the season and will lead the offense in the Pinstripe Bowl next week against Clemson. Grunkemeyer has made no indication he is about to leave the Nittany Lions this offseason, but he is evaluating his options as any player would.

It is worth noting that former Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula, who transferred to Missouri, is also set to enter the transfer portal. A return to Penn State has been interesting to think about for a few minutes, but a Happy Valley reunion is probably unlikely.

As of this moment, four players on Penn State’s 2025 roster have reportedly decided to enter their names in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason. Defensive end Chaz Coleman and cornerback Elliot Washington II were two of the most recent additions to the transfer portal headlines this week. Offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier joined the transfer headlines this week. Tight end Joey Schlaffer left the team in the middle of the season as the first notable departure from this season’s roster.
