On Wednesday, it was revealed that ESPN’s College Gameday will be in College Station for Texas A&M’s (11-1, 7-1 SEC) first-round College Football Playoff home matchup in Kyle Field against Miami (10-2), needing to defeat the Hurricanes for a shot at facing No. 2 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
For those who have kept track over the past 30 or so years, College Gameday has not been kind to the Aggies, who are 1-11 since 1995, including last season’s home loss to the Texas Longhorns in front of a sold-out Kyle Field. Over the past two decades, Texas A&M has not drawn national attention, even during nearly every one of the six seasons under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, due to poor late-season results.
However, during the 2016 season, one of the last under the Kevin Sumlin regime, Texas A&M’s last win with College Gameday in College Station came against Tennessee in overtime, defeating the Volunteers 45-38. Still, it ended up losing 5 of its last seven games. Now, under head coach Mike Elko, the Aggies are back to national relevance, reaching the CFP in just his second season at the helm.
After breaking down several barriers, including the first non-conference ranked road win since 1979, the team defeated Notre Dame. The first win in Death Valley since 1994 after defeating LSU 49-25, this team isn’t afraid of so-called “curses,” including the potential effect of Gameday before what could be considered the biggest game in program history.
Texas A&M and Miami are highly similar on both sides of the ball, both possessing elite defensive lines, while starting quarterbacks Marcel Reed and Carson Beck both threw 25 touchdowns and ten interceptions during the regular season. This will likely be a close game that could come down to the final possessions, but for those who still fear the College GameDay record, this version of Texas A&M deserves some faith.
Texas A&M will host Miami (FL) at 11:00 a.m., with coverage on ABC and ESPN.
