BATON ROUGE — Sometimes you just got to go home.

Treylan James has already been back home but now he gets the chance to live out his dream. The Southern defensive back has committed to Lane Kiffin and LSU football, he announced via his X page, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

So far this transfer portal window, LSU has signed five defensive players and now James makes it six. And most of those new defensive guys have been defensive linemen. The other defensive back LSU has added out of the portal was Boise State transfer safety Ty Benefield.

James has two years of eligibility left. In his lone season at Southern, located crosstown in Baton Rouge, James collected 26 tackles, five passes defended and a forced fumble.

Why Treylan James picked LSU football out of transfer portal

A Baton Rouge native, James gets to stay home and play for the higher level hometown team. After signing with Prairie View A&M out of Madison Prep Academy, James transferred home to Southern after two seasons at PVAMU.

This is the first time James will get to play against SEC competition and he’ll now be able to do so every day.

How Treylan James will fit LSU football’s roster

James almost mirrors current young LSU cornerback star D.J Pickett in terms of size at 6-3, 200. The corner has a great length and athleticism to go with it and those are traits that are not coachable for a defensive back.

The coaching staff have flexibility on where James can play as he’s played both corner and safety. That could help him in his attempt to see the field for the Tigers.

LSU football transfer targets

  • Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
  • Alabama offensive lineman Micah DeBose
  • Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
  • North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
  • California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
  • McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis

When does transfer portal close?

The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
