Winners, losers from Georgia's 35-3 win over Charlotte

The Georgia Bulldogs are 10-1 after beating the hapless Charlotte 49ers, 35-3. Georgia beat on of the worst teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to pretty much lock in a College Football Playoff berth.

Georgia used a heavy does of rushing in the red zone to overwhelm Charlotte. The Bulldogs scored five rushing touchdowns (three from running back Bo Walker and two from running back Nate Frazier) in the dominant win.

“The team was probably overmatched, to be honest with you,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said about Charlotte. The 49ers don’t have a win over an FBS opponent all season.

Georgia’s defense suffocated Charlotte. The Dawgs allowed Charlotte to gain just seven first downs. The 49ers’ lone points of the day came after a Gunner Stockton interception. On the bright side, Charlotte is a winner for making $1.9 million to play Georgia.

Winner: RB Bo Walker

Georgia running back Bo Walker scored three of Georgia’s five touchdowns against Charlotte including the first touchdown of his career. Walker

“He’s been working his tail off every week,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on running back Bo Walker. He’s starting on two special teams units. He never complains. He’s got a smile on his face every day. Just love the way he competes and works. He’s still got to grow and get better at some things, but he catches the ball out of the backfield well, he blocks well, and he’s got good vision. So, I thought they opened some things up, and he made some people miss.

Loser: QB Gunner Stockton’s Heisman hopes

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 17 of 21 passes for 196 passing yards and an interception. He did not have any passing or rushing touchdowns and hurt his Heisman hopes. Stockton has had a performances against inferior opponents like this that weren’t flashy.

Stockton has had a pair of games against non-Power Four opponents (Charlotte and Austin Peay) without a touchdown. Winning is all that matters to Stokcton and Georgia, but for the fans that were hoping Stockton would win the Heisman, I think these two games are too much to overcome.

Winner: DL Elijah Griffin

Georgia freshman defensive lineman Elijah Griffin earned his first career sack against Charlotte. He bullied a Charlotte offensive lineman with a bull rush to get his sack. Griffin, a five-star recruit, has improved and is playing his best football of the season.

“Elijah’s (Griffin) growing up, playing faster,” Smart said. “He would tell you there was some anxiety there early in games, and he’s grown out of that. He’s getting more and more confident, and we need him to continue to grow and to get better and play like he’s capable of. He’s capable of being a dominant player. We need him to get better and grow up fast.”

Winner: Georgia’s senior class

Georgia’s senior class is 49-5 overall and 25-1 at Sanford Stadium. They have won a pair of SEC championships and a national championship (if they played at UGA all four years). The Bulldogs have a lot of winners.

Georgia’s seniors could return to Sanford Stadium for a first-round game in the College Football Playoff, but we’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the season goes. “There’s just so many guys that have done that and given so much to this university that I’m happy for them,” Smart said.
