Wisconsin defensive lineman enters NCAA transfer portal

Wisconsin football defensive lineman Jamel Howard has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to 247Sports’ Jon McNamara.

Howard joined the Badgers as a three-star recruit in the class of 2023. He was specifically ranked as the No. 1,213 overall player in the class, the No. 130 defensive lineman and the No. 26 recruit from Illinois. He initially committed in June of 2022, back when Paul Chryst led the program. The lineman later decommitted after Chryst’s firing, quickly adding major offers from Ole Miss and LSU, among others. He would eventually commit back to Wisconsin, this time to the Luke Fickell-led program, in February 2023.

Howard did not see any game action during his time with the Badgers. This will be his second time entering the transfer portal; he entered following the 2024 season, but opted to return to the program instead of seeking an opportunity elsewhere. He’s in the portal this time with two years of eligibility remaining.

The Chicago, Illinois, native is one of two Wisconsin linemen to enter the portal on Friday, joining four-star 2024 recruit Ernest Willor Jr. The two join a list of players to depart that also includes safety Preston Zachman, tight end Tucker Ashcraft, running back Dilin Jones, wide receiver Eugene Hilton, wide receiver Trech Kekahuna, wide receiver Joseph Griffin Jr., cornerback Geimere Latimer, linebacker Christian Alliegro, linebacker Tackett Curtis, center Jake Renfro, running back Cade Yacamelli and punter Atticus Bertrams.
