The Wisconsin-Minnesota rivalry carries one of the sport’s most recognizable trophies, Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

First played in 1890, the rivalry peaked as a Big Ten West referendum after divisional formation. With Wisconsin’s trenches and running back identity contrasting Minnesota’s developmental scheme discipline.

Wisconsin closes a disappointing season in the clash The Badgers' offense has struggled, averaging 251.7 yards (135th in FBS) and 13.4 points (135th). Its passing game has been particularly limited at 132.3 yards (133rd). Quarterback Danny O’Neil has 635 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

Minnesota’s attack has been more productive through the air, led by Drake Lindsey’s 2,145 yards, 15 TDs and 62.3% completion rate. Wisconsin’s strength lies on defense, where it ranks 16th in rushing yards allowed (103.3) and 37th overall (333.2).

Turnovers could swing the game. Both teams keep things clean, ranking top six nationally in fewest penalty yards. Minnesota’s red zone defense remains a concern, allowing scores on 89.7% of opponent trips (119th).

The Axe was stolen multiple times through history before formal exchange resumed in 1948. Few rivalries combine border pride, trophy theater, and a violent November leverage better than this one.

The Badgers visit Minnesota on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, FS1).
