Wisconsin's Emerson Mandell, Ryan Schwendeman upgraded for Big Ten opener

The availability report for the Wisconsin-Penn State Big Ten Conference opener revealed two more notable upgrades for the Badgers Sept. 25.

Right guard Emerson Mandell and tight end Ryan Schwendeman are listed as probable for the contest after receiving questionable distinction on the first two reports of the week.

Mandell, who had foot surgery in the spring, played his first game of the season last week and saw action in 26 snaps.

Schwendeman hasn’t played since the season opener when he got five snaps on offense in a 41-13 loss to Notre Dame.

The upgrades came one day after running back Abu Sama and receiver Malachi Coleman were upgraded from questionable to probable.

The only other change for the Badgers was the addition of punter Sean West to the list. The junior out of Homestead High School is probable for the game.

Penn State made one change: receiver Ethan Black was upgraded from questionable to probable. The big absence for the Nittany Lions is leading receiver Koby Howard, who is expected to an extended period of time, according to Penn State coach Matt Campbell.

Wisconsin Badgers

Out: cornerback Cai Bates, receiver Jaylon Domingeaux, offensive lineman Michael Roeske and defensive tackle Xavier Ukponu.

Questionable: running back Bryan Jackson.

Probable: running back Abu Sama, receiver Malachi Coleman, linebacker Mason Posa, receiver Eugene Hilton, quarterback Danny O’Neil, right tackle Kevin Heywood, right guard Emerson Mandell, tight end Ryan Schwendeman and punter Sean West.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Out: receiver Koby Howard, defensive end Lavar Arrington II, cornerback Joshua Johnson, defensive end Max Granville, linebacker Cam Smith, cornerback Christian Askew, cornerback Tyler Armstead, defensive end Mason Robinson, defensive end Dayshaun Bennett, offensive lineman Will Tompkins, tight end Cooper Alexander.

Questionable: offensive lineman Brock Riker, offensive lineman Dominic Rulli and tight end Andrew Rappleyea.

Probable: safety Omarion Davis and receiver Ethan Black.
