Lots of milestones will be within reach Saturday afternoon for the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College football team.
The Pomeroys play host to Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jay Barrett Field on the West Vigo High School campus for the 2025 Midwest Sprint Football League championship.
SMWC enters the game with a 7-0 record and a victory over the Crimson Wave (6-1) would give The Woods is first undefeated season. It would also be the program’s second MSFL playoff title and close out SMWC’s sprint-football era with a cumulative 28-4 record under coach Blaine Powell, who’s guided the Pomeroys through its first four seasons of gridiron competition.
A championship would send the program into its new era of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-level play — with players of any size, rather than the 190-pound limit for MSFL play — with lots of momentum.
Calumet (6–1) advanced with a semifinal victory over Midway last weekend and also will appear in its fourth straight MSFL championship game, seeking a third consecutive title. The teams were scheduled to meet for a regular-season matchup Oct. 18, but it was declared a no-contest because of severe weather minutes after kickoff.
The Pomeroys’ first MSFL playoff championship came in 2022, earned with a road victory at Calumet. That win contributed to one of the program’s most impressive distinctions: SMWC has never lost a true road game, entering the weekend with a 13–0 all-time road record. Meanwhile, Calumet has won the last two MSFL championships — both at Jay Barrett Field.
SMWC quarterback Jeremiah Tosky anchors an explosive offense with 1,567 passing yards and 16 touchdowns entering championship week. He threw for 167 yards and two scores in last Saturday’s semifinal triumph over Bellarmine. Running backs Derron Hazzard, Zy’Eiar White and Patrick Perea form one of the conference’s most reliable backfields. Hazzard scored three total touchdowns in the semifinal — two rushing and one receiving — while White added 73 yards and a 15-yard touchdown run.
Defensively, SMWC leads the conference in scoring defense at 19.3 points allowed per game. Adonimi Parker delivered a dominant semifinal performance with 10 tackles, four tackles for loss, an interception and two quarterback hurries. Holtman Doades and Tyler Young added interceptions.
The contest will air live on the Indiana Sports Network, stream on SMWCAthletics.com and be broadcast on radio station WNDI-FM 95.3.
