‘You got to have a mock Saturday’: Lane Kiffin makes unusual request of LSU fans days after Clemson blowout

LSU beat Clemson 51-10 on Saturday night and Lane Kiffin does not want to hear about it again. He said as much at Monday’s news conference, more than once, and then he turned around and asked everyone in Baton Rouge to do the whole thing over.

That is the contradiction sitting at the center of his week, and it’s not really a contradiction at all given what’s on the calendar.

“Again, I spent a lot of time today on last week’s over,” Kiffin said. “We don’t even talk about it except for answering questions in here, and it won’t matter. We got to get ready to play really well. I’m challenging them. Like everything’s got to be the same as last Saturday. I challenge our fans the same thing. You know, the fans were electric the whole walk, the beginning of the game, the first quarter. You could feel it coming down on the opponent, and there’s been people here a long time and said it was one of the loudest, intense feelings they’ve felt here ever, and so let’s bring it again. Don’t let the opponent dictate how you are a fan. As I say, don’t fan for free.”

He suggested fans stage their own version of the previous week.

“If you got to have a mock Saturday, put up a stage as if College GameDay’s here, whatever it is, come out here early. Whatever you did last week, do it again.”

Here is what he’s asking them to do it for. Louisiana Tech, 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday, on SEC Network+.

Compare that to what Saturday actually was. A record night. GameDay on campus, Clemson ranked, ABC in prime time, 102,321 people inside Tiger Stadium. Asking that crowd to reproduce itself for Louisiana Tech is asking for something Tiger Stadium almost never produces two weeks running, and Kiffin knows it.

Why Kiffin needs this week to look like last week

Ole Miss is on Sep 19, in Oxford. GameDay is already booked for it. Kiffin will walks back into a stadium where fans jeered him onto a plane when he left for LSU, and the SEC has been circling that date since the schedule dropped.

That’s the game; this week is the rehearsal.

Kiffin has spent his whole career treating atmosphere as a piece of equipment rather than a bonus, and one could see it in the Clemson game, basketball goal on the sideline and all. He took a 20-footer during an extra point when LSU was already up big.

Louisiana Tech, for what it’s worth, is not a total nothing opponent. The Bulldogs opened by hanging 80 on Northwestern State, the most points they’ve ever scored in a Division I game.

But nobody in Baton Rouge is worried about Louisiana Tech, and Kiffin didn’t spend Monday pretending otherwise. He spent it trying to make sure the loudest night anyone can remember at Tiger Stadium wasn’t a one-off, because the one that counts is 12 days away, and he’s the reason it counts, all eyes on Ole Miss vs. LSU.
