The Big Ten has been a football powerhouse for more than a century, and the main driving forces of that dominance have almost always been Ohio State and Michigan.

Michigan Stadium, generally known as the Big House, seats 107,601, but they can squeeze in 115,000 on a big day when the fire Marshall’s not looking.

There weren’t that many in the stands on September 1, 2007, when Appalachian State shocked the world, winning at Michigan, 34-32.

It was such an unlikely outcome that Las Vegas bookmakers didn’t even lay odds on the game.

No one took App State seriously, including the Michigan players, many of whom partied a little too hard on Friday night and didn’t show up in the best possible condition. They probably should have: Appalachian won the FCS national championship in 2005 and 2006. No one knew it yet, but they were on their way to a third straight title.

The Mountaineers didn’t think they were pushovers, and came out to make a point, racking up a 28-17 halftime lead.

The Wolverines fought back though, and took a 32-31 lead with four minutes to go. Appalachian didn’t give up though, driving downfield and scoring a field goal with 0:26 to play, taking a 34-32 lead.

Michigan drove downfield in response, and set up a field goal attempt with just 0:06 on the clock.

However, Corey Lynch blocked it for the Mountaineers, and wasn’t far from scoring another touchdown when he was pulled down.

It was a monumental upset in many ways. It was the first time a team went from Top 5 to unranked in a week, and the AP changed the rules, allowing FCS teams to be eligible for votes in the FBS AP Poll. And, for a great bit of trivia, it was also the first game ever on the Big Ten Network.
