Jet Dineen (b. Jan. 23, 2004) is a preferred walk-on defensive back, a special teams stalwart, and a Kansas University legacy from Free State High School in Lawrence who redshirted and did not play in 2022.
He graduated from K-State in December 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies, and now he is working on his conflict resolution certificate.
Dineen saw time in six games in 2023 as a member of both the kickoff return and punt return units, playing on 50 total special teams plays, and finished the season as a first-team Academic All-Big 12 performer.
In 2024, he played in every game as a member of the kickoff return, kickoff coverage and punt return units — seeing time on 125 total special teams plays, including 64 on kickoff return duties — and again earned Academic All-Big 12 honors.
Last season, Dineen again played in all 12 games, seeing time on 113 special teams plays as a member of the kickoff return, kickoff coverage and punt coverage units. He also played some scout team running back.
Dineen recorded a tackle on kickoff coverage at Utah and also played on nine defensive snaps, finishing the season by picking up Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators in addition to being an Academic All-Big 12 performer.
This last offseason, he set a new position group weightlifting record for safeties by squatting 510 pounds!
Dineen prepped under head coach Kevin Stewart at Free State, where he was a first-team all-state honoree as a senior and Kansas Shrine Bowl participant in addition to being named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association (KFBCA) Top 11.
He was named Sports in Kansas’ 6A Defensive Player of the Year and was among the final four candidates for the Simone Award as the top prep player in the Kansas City metro area.
Dineen recorded 77 tackles, three tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, two pass breakups and two interceptions for the Firebirds as a senior.
He also was stellar as a quarterback, throwing for 1,558 yards and 17 touchdowns on 104-of-197 aim with only three interceptions while also rushing for 1,516 yards and 18 touchdowns on 178 carries.
Dineen set the FSHS record for most total yards in a season and also competed in basketball.
Named the 2022 National Football Foundation’sCoach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winner, he also was successful in the classroom as a prep.
Dineen chose the Wildcats over scholarship offers from Pittsburg State, Northwest Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State and Washburn, as well as preferred walk-on offers from Kansas, Nebraska, SMU and TCU.
He comes from a long family line of proud Jayhawks:
- His mother, Jodi Oelschlager, was a volleyball letter-winner at Kansas from 1986 to 1989.
- His oldest brother, Joe Dineen Jr., was a linebacker for the Jayhawks from 2014 to 2018 and currently is a defensive analyst at KU (he previously coached at Illinois, SMU and Purdue).
- Another brother, Jay Dineen, was a linebacker for Kansas from 2017 to 2022.
- Their grandfather, Ron Oelschlager, played running back at KU from 1962 to 1964.
- Their great-grandfather played basketball at Kansas for the legendary Phog Allen.
- Breaking the mold, older brother Jax Dineen was a fullback for the Wildcats from 2019 to 2022.
All this makes Jax’s and Jet’s decisions to attend K-State, not KU, all the more entertaining!
*K-State has recently announced a new classification scheme that designates players by their year of eligibility regardless of whether they have “redshirted,” a term that will go out of use with the new “5-for-5” rule. Thus, the KSU SID lists Dineen as a “fifth year” even though he did not play in 2022. For the sake of consistency with past posts, I will continue to designate redshirts based on their playing history, but also note their remaining eligibility to stay consistent with the new designations as well.
