Michael Bergeron (b. April 17, 2005) is an experienced walk-on safety out of Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kansas, who is majoring in accounting. He redshirted and did not see any playing time in 2023.
In 2024, Bergeron saw action in all 13 games as a member of the four core special teams units and tied for fourth on the team with three special teams tackles, which came against Arizona, West Virginia and Houston.
He saw time on 220 special teams plays during the season, which included 79 on kickoff coverage and 63 on kickoff returns, and finished as an Academic All-Big 12 performer.
Last season, Bergeron again played in all 12 games as a member of all four core special teams units, leading the squad by seeing time on 216 total special teams plays (and one very unfortunate play against Army). He also played some scout team running back due to injuries in the backfield.
Bergeron led the team with eight special teams tackles, including five on punt coverage; posted two tackles apiece at Arizona and Oklahoma State; had single tackles against Baylor, TCU, Kansas and Colorado; played on 216 total special teams plays; and once again earned Academic All-Big 12 accolades following the 2025 season.
He prepped under head coach Joel Applebee at Mill Valley, where he was part of a program that earned four straight Kansas Class 5A state championships.
A two-time first team all-state performer by Sports in Kansas and The Wichita Eagle, Bergeron also was named the Kansas Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 by Sports in Kansas, a Top 11 player by the Eagle and a KSHSAA Covered Class 5A Football Player to Watch in 2022. He was a 2023 Kansas Shrine Bowl participant.
Bergeron totaled 161 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, eight passes defended and two forced fumbles during his final two prep seasons for the Jaguars.
He was named a 2022-23 National Football Foundation (NFF) Coach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winner. (Watch his highlights here.)
At Mill Valley, Bergeron prepped at the same high school as former K-State defensive end Truman Griffith and offensive lineman Sam Hecht, as well as current safety Blake Jay and offensive linemen Lamarcus Barber and Gus Hawkins.
Bergeron walked on at K-State over a competing preferred walk-on offer from Kansas.
Former head coach Chris Klieman seemed high on his potential and mentioned him a few times:
Wesley Fair, Mike Bergeron, Jordan Riley — those guys have really stepped up and have made us a lot better and deeper in the secondary.
*K-State has recently announced a new classification scheme that designates players by their year of eligibility regardless of whether they have “redshirted,” a term that will go out of use with the new “5-for-5” rule. Thus, the KSU SID lists Bergeron as a true senior even though he did not play in 2023. For the sake of consistency with past posts, I will continue to designate redshirts based on their playing history, but also note their remaining eligibility to stay consistent with the new designations as well.
