The disrespect for Arkansas football head coach Ryan Silverfield is pervasive and obvious as the 2026 SEC Football Media Days event gets going in Tampa. Should Arkansas fans be upset by this? Yes, in the sense that having a disrespected coach is reflective of having a disrespected football program which has fallen to the bottom of the SEC. That should absolutely have Hog fans hopping mad. It shouldn't have come to this. More precisely, the Chad Morris disaster shouldn't have been replicated so soon after that particular collapse. Arkansas fans should definitely be mad, but on a broader level in response to the full situation enfolding their football team.

In terms of Ryan Silverfield specifically not getting any respect from SEC or national media, that's not something to be mad about. You know that's the prevailing view of football writers and experts. You know that other SEC coaches are going to get more publicity and praise at SEC media days. It's just the way it is.

Kevin Scarbinsky, the longtime Alabama-based sportswriter currently at The Birmingham News, released his latest YouTube broadcast in which he posed the question: Best new SEC football coach – Alex Golesh or Jon Sumrall? Ryan Silverfield isn't even included in the conversation as a possibility. The disrespect is clearly evident, flowing from a belief Arkansas won't amount to anything not only in 2026, but probably 2027 as well.

Again, the real problem is the state of Arkansas football on a larger level. This is not a "Ryan Silverfield is the problem" situation. Silverfield faces a tidal wave of skepticism that will go past SEC media days and linger into August preseason camp and the first big games of the season in September against Utah and Georgia. If Arkansas gets blasted in those games, the doubters will continue to doubt Silverfield 12 months from now at 2027 SEC Football Media Days.

The hire of Ryan Silverfield elicited a lot of legitimate frustration from Arkansas fans only because the coaching carousel rumor mill created the distinct possibility Alex Golesh was coming to Fayetteville. Not getting Golesh made Silverfield subsequently seem like a silver or bronze medal, a consolation prize. Silverfield surely knows this.

It's up to him to prove himself. Respect has to be earned. It won't be given. This is the reality Arkansas football faces going into the 2026 season.
