Florida head coach Jon Sumrall recently voiced his support for an expanded 24-team field in the college football playoff.

Publicly championing the idea for the first time, Sumrall said, "I'm for playoff expansion," during the SEC spring meetings. The current structure rewards just 12 teams, leaving SEC coaches and national experts debating what's best for the sport moving forward.

Sumrall's experience as a Group of Five coach during his successful campaigns with Tulane and Troy supports his viewpoint. Tulane made its first and only CFP appearance in 2025 under Sumrall as an 11th seed after winning the American Athletic Conference Championship.

The tournament expanded from four teams to 12 teams in 2024. Head man for the Orange and Blue went on to say, “I think access is nice to have when you’re at that level. I do think I’ve been on both sides of this now. Are there two deserving G6 teams in a 12-team playoff? I would question that. I think this league top to bottom is very challenging."

Expanded access to the contest could significantly benefit Florida and other programs eyeing a breakthrough. As the SEC transitions into a more difficult nine-game conference schedule, the debate will remain split on which teams are most deserving of a spot.
