With the 2027 recruiting class loading up for the Oregon Ducks, the program is bound to miss on a few targets.

On Sunday, three-star defensive back Kamauri Whitfield announced his commitment to the Florida Gators over fellow finalists Oregon and Nebraska. While the Ducks were a finalist and did host Whitfield for an official visit last month, it always seemed to be a battle between the Gators and Cornhuskers.

Whitfield, who also goes by the nickname “Bam,” is a unique defensive back because of his frame and skill set. At 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, he isn’t a perfect fit at corner or safety, but would be an ideal player for any program as a nickel defender.

The Ducks already have several talented players in the secondary within the class, and Chris Hampton’s defense won’t starve for talent without Whitfield in the mix. Five-star corner Hayden Stepp and four-star athlete Tae Walden Jr. both committed earlier this month. Four-star corner Josiah Molden, the top recruit in Oregon, and four-star safeties Semaj Stanford and Malakai Taufoou are also committed.

Oregon held a strong relationship with Whitfield, but with the Ducks loading up on talent at the position, the Orlando native was more likely to stay closer to home and eye an easier path to playing time with the Gators under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

After adding three elite commitments to their class, the Ducks are pushing for the top of the national recruiting rankings this summer. A few key targets are still available, and the Ducks are eyeing four-star linebacker Brayton Feister next, with his commitment scheduled for later this month.
