5 things to watch as Florida opens SEC slate at Auburn

Florida football passed its first two tests in the Jon Sumrall era with minimal adversity, even if the opponents were less then equal. Now, the difficult level jumps significantly as the Gators travel to Auburn.

The Gators dismantled Florida Atlantic and Campbell, outscoring them 118-24. Behind quarterback Aaron Philo, the Florida scoring attack has been explosive and running back Jadan Baugh's performances have justified his preseason first-team All-American selection. The offense has been humming and the defense has produced enough disruptive plays to keep both games comfortably out of reach.

However, Jordan-Hare Stadium will provide a much different environment in which the Gators will need to execute on Saturday. Florida was not able to secure a road win last season and have not won at Auburn since 1999. The Tigers are 2-0 under first-year head coach Alex Golesh.

This battle will be a chance for one of these programs to establish itself in the conference and gain confidence under a new regime.

Aaron Philo's first road test

Philo has looked composed through his first two starts at UF, but an SEC road atmosphere can present en entirely new set of challenges for the redshirt sophomore. It will be interesting to watch how he handles the crowd noise, pressure and what his demeanor looks like if the Gators fall behind or he makes a big mistake. I would also pay attention to how much offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is willing to let Philo open up the offense.

Jadan Baugh vs. Auburn front

Baugh is the bell cow for Florida and the centerpiece of Buster Faulkner's offense. He's rushed for almost 300 yards through the first two week and scored five touchdowns. Auburn hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown and did not give up a run longer than 12 yards to either Southern Mississippi or Baylor. This could be the most important matchup of the game.

Can Florida start fast?

The opening 15 minutes of Saturday night's game will be crucial. Look for Florida to try and set the tone early and quiet the Jordan-Hare crowd. Attitude, execution, penalty-free football will be at a premium even if the Gators don't immediately put points on the board, they should come out with lots of juice.

Eric Singleton Jr's status

Singleton's potential return would add another dynamic element to the Florida offense. It would also five the former Auburn receiver an opportunity to face his old team. Together, the trio of Singleton, Wilson and Vernell Brown III were acknowledged as one of the nation's best receiving corps — it will be exciting to see Philo and Faulkner with their full compliment of weapons available.

How will Florida respond when something goes wrong?

Florida was never forced to play uncomfortable in the first two weeks of the season. That will almost certainly change on Saturday. Should it be a turnover, Auburn touchdown or questionable call, I'd watch how the Gators respond when momentum swings towards the Tigers.
