The day before its appearance in the Fiesta Bowl in the College Football Playoff semifinals, Ole Miss football hired Patrick Toney to be its new defensive coordinator.
The Rebels announced Toney’s hiring on Jan. 7. Before joining Ole Miss, he was the safeties coach for the Arizona Cardinals, who fired coach Jonathan Gannon Jan. 5.
Toney will take over an Ole Miss defense that ranked ninth in the SEC in points allowed and total yards allowed, 12th in rushing yards allowed, fifth in passing yards allowed, sixth in sacks and 10th in interceptions.
Toney is replacing Pete Golding, who was elevated from defensive coordinator to head coach when Lane Kiffin left for LSU on Nov. 30.
Golding won his first two games in the playoffs vs Tulane and Georgia before the Rebels lost to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl semifinals.
Patrick Toney coaching history
The 2025 season was Toney’s third with the Arizona Cardinals. In 2024, he coached Budda Baker to a second team All-Pro season.
Prior to joining the Cardinals, he spent 11 years coaching at the college level.
From 2020-21, he was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana, where he won two Sun Belt championships on Billy Napier’s staff.
In 2022, he was the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Florida, joining Napier as he made the move to Gators coach.
Toney’s other stops include UTSA, Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.
