Captain Munnerlyn Jr., the son of former South Carolina football star Captain Munnerlyn, received his own offer from the Gamecocks.

Munnerlyn Jr. posted on his social media Jan. 26 that he received an offer from South Carolina, the same day he posted that Florida and Tennessee made him offers, too.

The 6-foot-1 safety is from the Class of 2029 and plays for Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama. He doesn’t have a player ranking from 247Sports as of now. As a freshman he had 63 tackles, five tackles for loss, nine passes defended, three sacks and two interceptions this past season, according to Maxpreps.

His dad played three seasons in Columbia from 2006-2008, recording 96 solo tackles and five tackles for loss. The cornerback was then drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

Munnerlyn spent his first five seasons with the Panthers before a three-year stint in Minnesota with the Vikings from 2014-16.

He then returned to Carolina for his final two NFL seasons in 2017 and 2018. Munnerlyn also grew up in Mobile, Alabama, but played for Murphy High School.

He told The State on Jan. 27 that he “wouldn’t think that (his son) would shy away from the University of South Carolina because I went there. I think it is probably more enticing.”

Coach Steve Spurrier was in just his second year with the program when Munnerlyn first arrived on campus. Spurrier left in 2015 then the Gamecocks hired Will Muschamp, who was fired midway through the 2020 season.

Shane Beamer was introduced as the next head coach in December 2020, with his first season in 2021.

Beamer was on Spurrier’s staff as an assistant beginning in 2007, overlapping with Munnerlyn.

If Munnerlyn Jr. decides to come to South Carolina, and Beamer is still the coach, he would be in his ninth season by 2029.
