A key coaching vacancy in Alabama State football has been filled with a coach that is familiar with the SWAC and HBCU football.

Tony Hull is set to be the next offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Hornets, the university has confirmed. Hull comes to Alabama State after being the offensive coordinator at Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the 2025 season.

Chris Barnette, who was the offensive coordinator for Alabama State in 2025, is set to be the offensive coordinator at North Carolina Central, according to sources.

In 2025, Arkansas Pine-Bluff finished ninth in scoring offense in the SWAC and seventh in both passing and rushing offense.

Hull’s shining moment came in 2024 when he was co-offensive coordinator at Grambling State where the Tigers ranked third in the SWAC in total offense, first in yards per game and first in rushing yards.

Hull’s coaching experience is extensive with a stop at Louisiana-Monroe as the running backs coach, co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Hawai’i and associate head coach and running backs coach at Kansas.

Hull has coached players that have went on to play in the NFL like Khalil Herbert ― who has the third-best, single-game rushing performance in the NCAA for Kansas ― and Cincinnati Bengals receiver Pooka Williams Jr., who is only the second Kansas receiver to post consecutive 1,000 receiving yard seasons.

Hull comes to an Alabama State football team that is coming off one of its best seasons since 2004 and inherits an offense that finished first or second in every offensive category in the SWAC.

It’s big shoes to fill for Hull in the 2026 season, but fortunately for the new Hornet offensive coordinator, QB Te’Sean Smoot is set to return after stepping in for an injured Andrew Body. Smoot finished undefeated as a starter, keeping Alabama State in contention for a shot at a SWAC title.
