LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was listed as probable on initial injury reports ahead of Saturday's matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks. It got less likely that he would play as the kickoff neared. On Saturday morning, he was ruled out.
Nussmeier had been dealing with an abdominal injury for much of the season and it got re-aggravated during practice earlier this week.
"A little nagging injury re-occurred itself today," said interim coach Frank Wilson earlier in the week, "I think he's probable, but a little bit concerning, something that we need to monitor."
Nussmeier has completed a career-high 67.4% of his passes, but for just 1,927 yards and 12 touchdowns to five interceptions. The production has gone way down and the selection of throws available to him have hampered the offense.
The senior was benched in favor of Michael Van Buren late against the Alabama Crimson Tide, and that's who will receive the reigns of the offense to start against the Razorbacks.
Van Buren has completed 18-of27 passes this year for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Not counting sacks, he has run the ball 11 times for 52 yards and a touchdown with two fumbles.
It will be interesting to see how the game plan changes for Wilson and play caller Alex Atkins with Van Buren behind center. He's different from Nussmeier in many ways.
This could be a great chance for the former Mississippi State Bulldogs signal caller to audition for the full-time Tigers quarterback job next year, but there are still a handful of decisions that need ot be made before that one.
