The Florida football team is off to a good start under new head coach Jon Sumrall, even though he has yet to coach a game. That is because the Gators are getting some top players on the recruiting trail. Florida just earned the commitment of four-star offensive tackle Kennedee Jackson, per Rivals.
Jackson is from the state of Georgia. Florida was able to scoop him up even though he had offers and lots of interest from both Georgia and Georgia Tech. LSU was also involved with the young lineman.
Jackson is a member of the Class of 2027. He is listed at 300 pounds and should immediately compete for snaps as a starter.
“He’s ranked as the No. 8 OT in the 2027 Rivals300,” reporter Hayes Fawcett posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Sumrall comes to the Gators after having a successful tenure as head coach at Tulane. He led Tulane to the College Football Playoff during the 2025 season.
Florida football has high expectations for their new head coach
The Gators are hoping to once again reach the top of the SEC. Florida fired former head coach Billy Napier in 2025, following a disappointing tenure.
Sumrall was sought after by many schools the last few years. He heads to Florida after winning 20 total games in two seasons at Tulane. He also previously was the head coach at Troy, where he also had great success.
The new head coach is excited to get things started at Florida.
“This is a sleeping giant. I’m telling you right now it ain’t a matter of if we’re going to win here. It’s how fast we’re going to win. It’s coming. Just wait. Like it’s coming. I’m not patient. I want it to happen every day. But we are going to land some pieces in recruiting, and we are about to do some things that I think will build a roster here that is going to bring it back to where we all want it to be,” Sumrall said after the team’s spring game in April, per USA Today.
Florida kicks off the 2026 football season with a game against Florida Atlantic. That contest is scheduled for September 5.
