The Oklahoma Sooners had their opportunities to earn an upset win over Ole Miss three weeks ago, but couldn’t come through in the fourth quarter to get the win. It was their second loss of the season after an underwhelming performance against Texas, and then losing after a slow start against the Rebels. Oklahoma has won two in a row with its back against the wall following its 23-21 win over the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide.

There was no more room for error if Oklahoma wanted to make the College Football Playoff. They couldn’t afford another loss. Even with their schedule, the College Football Playoff committee would have been hard-pressed to put in a three-loss team from any conference. So the Sooners had to win. And in their last two games, the Sooners have done just that.

“Hard to kill.” That’s the mantra that the team is living by, and in road wins against top 25 opponents, Tennessee and Alabama, the Sooners showed that resilience and fortitude. They took their lumps, but like Michael Myers or Jason from the cult classic horror films, the Sooners just kept coming.

And now Oklahoma is in a great position to make the College Football Playoff. According to the ESPN Football Power Index, Oklahoma’s chances of making the CFP jumped to 49.2%. The ESPN All-State Playoff predictor has the Sooners’ chances of making the playoff at 52.3%. If the Sooners win out and go 10-2, Oklahoma’s chances of making the playoff jump to 97% and they have a 76% chance to host a first-round game as the No. 8 seed in the playoff.

A home playoff game in Norman in December. That would be absolutely electric.

But before Oklahoma can start making plans to host, they have to win their next two games. Missouri and LSU boast a pair of really good defenses and offenses with skill talent that can beat you. Nothing is guaranteed for Oklahoma. They can’t get ahead of themselves. If they do, they could find themselves on the wrong side of an upset at home.

But after a 6-7 season a year ago, Oklahoma is 8-2 with a chance to contend in 2025. The Sooners are right where they want to be.
