Despite having a couple of high NFL draft picks at the edge rusher position last year, with both Derrick Moore and Jaishawn Barham going in the second day of the 2026 NFL draft in April, there's a strong chance that the Wolverines could have one of the best edge rushing attacks in college this season, in large part due to an incoming player that doesn't seem to have nearly as much hype as he should.
Michigan football managed to get a transfer commitment from former BYU and Utah defensive end John Henry Daley, an All-American this past year who had 17.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in 11 games — by comparison, Aidan Hutchinson had 10 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in his first 11 games in 2021. Daley's junior campaign was shortened due to a ruptured Achilles.
Now, he's expected to return healthy, although now wearing a winged helmet. With his position coach last year, Lewis Powell, now in Ann Arbor, could Daley have something of a reprise of his standout third season in college football?
Time will tell on that, but PFF noted that the highest-rated returning edge rusher in the entire sport will be suiting up in maize and blue in Ann Arbor this season.

Daley will pair with junior Dom Nichols, senior Cam Brandt, sophomore Nate Marshall, junior Lugard Edokpayi, and true freshman Carter Meadows in the revamped Wolverines ' pass-rushing attack. He was cleared to return to full action on June 1, when the Wolverines resumed work toward the 2026 season with summer conditioning.
