New reporting from The Wall Street Journal suggests Michigan officials were alerted to concerns about former head football coachSherrone Moore’s relationship with a staff member more than a year before the university ultimately fired him. According to a report published Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal’s Corinne Ramey and Rachel Bachman, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confronted Moore about his relationship with executive assistant Paige Shiver just two days before the Wolverines opened the 2024 season.
The report states the conversation occurred on Aug. 29, 2024, with Manuel documenting the exchange in a handwritten note on Michigan letterhead.
“I told him I didn’t remember if we had already discussed, but that she couldn’t accompany him on trips,” Manuel wrote, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the university commissioned law firm Jenner & Block to investigate the athletic department’s culture following a series of controversies. The firm’s findings reportedly concluded that Michigan’s response to complaints involving Moore was insufficient and that it was unclear who was responsible for handling allegations of misconduct within the athletic department.
The university has not publicly released the law firm’s report.
A Michigan spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that the university acted promptly after learning of Moore’s relationship with the staff member but declined further comment because of ongoing litigation.
“The university promptly fired Moore upon learning of the relationship,” the spokesperson told the outlet.
Moore was dismissed with cause in December 2025 after Michigan said it had found “credible evidence” that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Before becoming Michigan’s head coach, Moore spent four seasons as an assistant under Jim Harbaugh from 2020 through 2023. During the 2023 season, he served as acting head coach while Harbaugh served multiple suspensions, including one tied to the Big Ten’s investigation into Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal. Following Michigan’s national championship victory and Harbaugh’s departure to become head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was promoted as the program’s 21st head coach.
