How Caleb Goodie’s Speed Impacts Mizzou’s Offense

Incoming transfer wide receiver Caleb Goodie is fast, and that speed can change an entire offense. Take it from Mizzou Athletics:

“(He) Ranked among the nation’s top five fastest wide receivers in average speed according to Telemetry Sports, a data and analytics company used by more than 50 NFL and college football programs…”

On the surface, the statistics show it as well. In 2024 at Colorado State, Goodie collected 436 yards on just 21 receptions. That equals 20.8 yards per catch to go along with an average depth of target of 17.2.

This past season at Cincinnati, he added 484 more yards on 29 receptions, with 16.7 Y/R and an ADOT of 15.6. His Y/R and ADOT numbers exceed Mizzou’s 2025 four-leading wide receivers: Kevin Coleman Jr’, Donovan Olugbode, Marquis Johnson, and Josh Manning.

Due to his speed, if there is the smallest mistake by a safety, there is no mulligan; he will make you pay. Here, against Colorado State, the safety overpursues due to the ball being slightly inaccurate. Once Goodie secures the catch, no one catches him for an 85-yard score.

Again, any open space, and he’s taking it to the house.

Speed kills, but the deeper question is: How does a player like Goodied, one of the fastest players in the nation, impact an entire offense?

Projecting Goodie’s usage will most likely be as the Z wide receiver. The Z receiver is a unique role because as they are usually your most speedy type of receiver, who stretches the field vertically, they will naturally create plays for others.

Meaning Goodie will make an impact, even when the ball isn’t in his hands. This play below against Air Force in 2024 is a prime example of that.

Two players end up covering Goodie; the safety can’t come downhill like he wants to with Goodie threatening deep. It leaves the No. 2 wide receiver open on a corner route for a chunk gain.

I hypothesized that this impact would not be limited to just the passing game. When observing Cincinnati’s games against Kansas and Utah, the Bearcats utilized Goodie in jet motions where Brandon Sorsby would keep the ball on a designed run. Of course, this has to be accounted for by the defense.

Goodie is a player that can turn a reverse into a sizable gain.

Mizzou’s offense is going to be hunting for more explosives downfield. They’ve added a quarterback and an offensive coordinator, who I believe will elevate that aspect of the game. Goodie is one of the players that will benefit from this philosophy.

And with Goodie in this offense, it’ll create for guys in the intermediate part of the field like Cayden Lee, who will be in the slot, and Donovan Oglubbode, playing in the X because of his stature and size. And even the tight ends, who should have a bigger impact in 2026. But it also impacts the run game.

Goodie is going to have an impact on this offense in 2026. It may not show up directly in the box score stats, but his home run speed alone will cause defenses to allocate resources, opening things up for this unit this fall.

48 days until kickoff and thanks for reading.
