For the first time since Marcus Mariota’s last season as quarterback, the Oregon Ducks football team has a realistic chance of winning their first national championship in the program’s history.
Mariota won the Heisman Trophy that season and it wouldn’t be to anyone’s shock if current quarterback Dante Moore won the 2026 Heisman as well. But unlike Mariota, Moore is surrounded by some of the best talent around at nearly every spot on the field. Mariota’s teammates were very good as well, but not like this.
Another factor in the Ducks‘ favor for this upcoming season is the players’ actual age. According to Rotowire.com, Oregon‘s roster has an average age of 20.18 years old. That would be about a junior, someone with plenty of experience on their side, but still has a lot to learn going forward.
Nationally, Oregon’s national age ties for the 93rd-oldest team in the country out of 138 FBS teams. But more importantly, the Ducks are the seventh-youngest team in the Big Ten. In contrast, USC is the youngest team in the conference with an average age of just 19.87 years old.
Being in the middle of the pack is good where a possible national championship is concerned, but it’s also beneficial concerning long-term success. Teams don’t want to be too old with a looming roster turnover around the corner, and they don’t want to be too young with little experience to draw upon for a grueling Big Ten schedule.
The Ducks have upperclassmen in the perfect spots on the field. Not only at quarterback, but much of the offensive line and defensive line are also older, and many turned down the NFL in order to play in Eugene for one more season. Oregon also has players such as Evan Stewart, Jamari Johnson, Matayo Uiagalelei, and others who will play a huge role in determining whether or not this team goes all the way.
