Heading into the upcoming 2026 college football season, the Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning appear to be one of the best teams in the nation on paper.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that star quarterback Dante Moore decided to forego the 2026 NFL Draft to return for another season in Eugene. His presence alone boosted Oregon's odds of making a championship run this season.
Moore is coming off of a 2025 season with the Ducks that saw him complete 71.8 percent of his pass attempts for 3,565 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also picked up 156 yards and scored two more touchdowns on the ground.
With that being said, ESPN clearly agrees that Oregon is one of the top contenders in the country.
In ESPN's college football power index, the Ducks have been given the fourth-best chance of winning the National Championship. Oregon has been handed a 9.8 percent chance of winning it all, coming in behind just Ohio State, Texas, and Notre Dame.
ESPN has also projected that the Ducks' record will be 10.2 wins and 2.3 losses.
Looking at the schedule, Oregon has reason to be highly optimistic. While the Ducks will have an extremely difficult matchup on the road against the Buckeyes on November 7, the rest of the schedule is very favorable.
Other tougher games will include a road matchup against the USC Trojans on September 26, a road game against Illinois on October 24, and a home showdown with the Michigan Wolverines on November 14.
Assuming Oregon plays up to its potential, a run to the College Football Playoff should be a no-brainer. Past that, the Ducks will be loaded on both sides of the football in the playoff.
While there are a few other top-tier contenders around the country, Oregon has to feel good about its current positioning. ESPN agrees and the odds are in place for a reason.
All of that being said, the Ducks are scheduled to open up the 2026 season with a home matchup against the Boise State Broncos on September 5.
