We have spent much of the past few weeks analyzing ESPN’s Football Power Index from a variety of angles, including where Colorado stands within the Big 12 and the Buffaloes’ projected 2026 record.
Based on the FPI, Colorado is expected to finish right around a 6-6 record and be middle of the pack in the Big 12. Achieving those goals should be seen as a win for a Buffaloes team coming off a 3-9 season, especially considering CU’s schedule. The Buffs have a challenging slate with Big 12 powers like Texas Tech, Arizona State and Houston all on the schedule, as well as nonconference matchups against Power Four programs like Georgia Tech and Northwestern.
While FPI believes the Buffaloes have enough talent for at least six wins, what does ESPN’s matchup predictor think? Thanks to the matchup predictor, we have a system that predicts all 12 regular-season games, so we know against what opponents Colorado is most likely to win.
Here’s how the Colorado Buffaloes‘ 2026 season would finish according to ESPN’s matchup predictor, which can vary from FPI.
Week 1 at Georgia Tech
Matchup Prediction: Georgia Tech (58.5%)
No doubt the Buffs have an immense challenge on their hands to open the season. They will need to be firing on all cylinders to upset the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.
Week 2 vs. Weber State
Matchup Prediction: Colorado (97.7%)
All Colorado has to do in Week 2 is avoid a trap game, which should be relatively easy, given that it will be the team’s home opener. Expect the Buffs’ talent advantage to show up in a major way.
Week 3 at Northwestern
Matchup Prediction: Northwestern (52.5%)
A trip to Evanston is another tough road game on the Buffaloes 2026 schedule. They are lucky the game will be played in the evening and in mid-September, limiting the factors of Northwestern’s temporary Lake Michigan-fronted stadium.
Week 4 at Baylor
Matchup Prediction: Baylor (63.8%)
The road gauntlet continues for Colorado with a tough Big 12 opener in Waco. How the first three games of the season play out would seem to have a lot to do with how this one goes down.
Week 5 vs. Texas Tech
Matchup Prediction: Texas Tech (83.6%)
The very difficult opening stretch continues into Week 5 with a visit from the reigning Big 12 champions. Perhaps the Buffaloes catch a break without Brendan Sorsby, but this is an extremely difficult game, and it will be a good litmus test for how good the Buffs can really be.
Week 7 vs. Utah
Matchup Prediction: Utah (51.8%)
Following a bye, Colorado welcomes Utah to what should be a winnable game for the Buffaloes, but once again, not an easy one. The schedule softens up after Week 6, so nabbing at least one win against Utah, Texas Tech and Baylor would be huge.
Week 8 at Oklahoma State
Matchup Prediction: Oklahoma State (53.6%)
The Cowboys should be much improved in 2026, and FPI recognizes that. Playing in Stillwater is never easy, but hopefully the Buffs are coming off a win against Utah and have some momentum.
Week 9 vs. Kansas State
Matchup Prediction: Colorado (55.5%)
Kansas State is under a rebuild with first-year head coach Collin Klein, and the Buffaloes should enter Week 9 looking for a win.
Week 10 at Arizona State
Matchup Prediction: Arizona State (58.1%)
If Arizona State looks like a contender in November, this game will be a challenge, but if the Sun Devils falter late like they did last year, an improved Buffaloes team can pull out the upset.
Week 11 vs. Houston
Matchup Prediction: Colorado (50.7%)
If Colorado wants a successful season and a bowl game, it will likely come down to the season’s final three games, all of which are manageable. Surprisingly, Houston is not favored in this matchup after its double-digit win in the 2025 season. Perhaps FPI expects a slight regression from the Cougars.
Week 12 at Cincinnati
Matchup Prediction: Cincinnati (58.8%)
The Bearcats get the home-team bump, but this should be a much closer game than the percentage above predicts.
Week 13 vs. UCF
Matchup Prediction: Colorado (67.7%)
If Colorado enters this game with 5 wins, they should feel confident that a well-played game should lead to a bowl berth. The Buffs are the more talented squad and are at home when it could be a cold one in Boulder.
Final record, per ESPN’s matchup predictor
Record: 4-8
A final record of 4-8, while a one-win improvement over last year, would be a major disappointment for a team that finished 3-9 last year. ESPN’s predictor is far from an end-all, be-all, considering it changes every week as new data emerges after games conclude.
