We’re only 47 days away from Penn State’s season opener, so how about whetting your appetite with a look back at one of the most iconic moments in program history?

New Years’ Day 1983: With the Nittany Lions just beyond midfield and clinging to a tenuous 20-17 lead over Georgia in the fourth quarter of the Sugar Bowl with a national championship on the line, Todd Blackledge faked the handoff to his roommate Curt Warner, surveyed the landscape, and fired a bomb towards a streaking Gregg Garrity who made a diving catch in the end zone to secure the touchdown and put PSU back up by ten. It would be just enough to ultimately stave off any potential Georgia rally, as the Nittany Lions prevailed 27-23, delivering Joe Paterno his first of two national titles.

Currently wearing the No. 47 jersey on the Penn State roster is defensive end Aidan Probst. As a redshirt freshman last season, the Erie native was named three times as the coaching staff’s Developmental Squad Defensive Player of the Week.
