Texas A&M’s coach Mike Elko enters his third season at the helm after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, shattering expectations, while a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft back in late April. Accomplishing these goals in just two years matters and further proves that Elko was the right hire after six underwhelming years under Jimbo Fisher.
Combined with two seasons as Duke’s head coach, Elko’s 35-16 overall record is above average, but among the other 16 SEC head coaches, the New Jersey native is ranked 6th with a 68 career winning percentage, and compared to Texas coach Steve Sarkisian’s 62% average, it’s fair to note that Sarkisian is entering his sixth season with the Longhorns, compared to Elko’s third year in College Station.
If we’re strictly going by SEC winning percentage, Elko’s 19-7 record comes out to 73%, which is still highly respectable, and it’s important to note that during the 2024 season, if star running back Le’Veon Moss didn’t suffer his season ending leg injury after the Aggies started 7-1, Elko’s would likely have 20-plus wins after his first two seasons.
Before SEC media days, starting on Monday, Mike Elko, along with starting quarterback Marcel Reed, safety Marcus Ratcliffe, and linebacker Daymion Sanford, will speak on Wednesday, while Elko will take to the podium for the Q&A portion of the event as the final speaker in the late afternoon. Just six weeks before the 2026 season opener vs. Missouri State, the pressure is on for the Aggies to get back to the CFP for a second consecutive season.
