Bret Bielema’s SEC shot highlights college football’s new NIL reality

Much of the college football preseason buzz has centered around the Big Ten and SEC. From discussions about potentially breaking away from the NCAA to debates over which conference reigns supreme, both leagues have dominated the news cycle.

Now, a Big Ten coach has added more fuel to the debate. Illinois head coach Bret Bielema delivered a pointed sound bite about the SEC that certainly turned heads.

“They kind of want to live in 2005 forever,” Bielema said. “The whole world changed. It’s overly obvious to say that, but I think anything that predates that is just a different time in college football. It just is.”

Bielema was, of course, referring to the impact that NIL and the transfer portal have had on college football. His comment is interesting, though, considering the SEC’s dominance extended well beyond 2005.

Still, his broader point carries weight. College football has changed dramatically, and NIL and the transfer portal have made many of the sport’s traditional recruiting advantages less significant. Programs can no longer rely solely on their brand, history, or coaching staff to attract elite talent.

Today’s recruits are looking beyond what happens on the field. They want to know what NIL opportunities are available, and some expect guaranteed starting roles as early as their freshman season.

The sport has evolved so rapidly that some coaches have struggled to adapt. The changing landscape even played a role in Nick Saban’s decision to retire. Since Saban’s retirement, the Big Ten has won three consecutive College Football Playoff national championships.

SEC powers such as Georgia and Texas remain among the favorites to compete for national titles. However, the conference no longer appears to hold the overwhelming edge it once did.

So while Bielema’s reference to 2005 may overlook how long the SEC’s dominance actually lasted, his larger point hits the mark. College football has changed, and programs must evolve with it—or risk watching the balance of power shift.
