SEC commissioner Greg Sankey says league’s breakaway consideration is ‘real’

For months now, as drastic changes look to be underway across college football, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and league affiliates have returned to the subject of the conference eventually breaking away from the NCAA.

It’s a threat that has come up time and time again in recent months, as the push to expand the current 12-team College Football Playoff to a 16- or 24-team format, among other changes.

Back in May, it was Georgia head coach Kirby Smart who brought up the concept.

“I’ve said this for a long time now…I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play our own,” Smart said in May, according to CBS Sports. “I’m not afraid of that.”

And neither is Sankey, it seems.

“They’re real,” Sankey said in response to questioning of whether the SEC’s breakaway threats are real, according to The Athletic. “People have talked about that. They’ve opined about the frustrations that bring them to the point of saying we should look at something significantly different. I do not believe that is a leverage point. I think that’s just honest communication. … I think what’s important is those comments represent a high level of frustration in the circumstances in which we find ourselves.”
