After a 2025 season defined by first-year starting quarterbacks, college football enters 2026 with far more experience under center. Many of the nation's top contenders return veteran signal-callers, but a handful of players still have the potential to shape the season in a major way.

ESPN recently ranked the 40 most important players in college football entering 2026, putting the spotlight on those who could help define this college football season, and Florida quarterback Aaron Philo earned a spot on the list as he prepares for his first season leading the Gators.

Aaron Philo comes in ranked No. 11 on the list and is listed under "QBs with spoiler and contender potential."

Though no starter has been named, Philo transferred into this situation with a head coach in Jon Sumrall who has won 11 games in three out of his first four seasons as a college football head coach, and his offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech, Buster Faulker, who is well respected as a coordinator.

Philo had a small sample size of playing time at Georgia Tech; in limited action, he was special. Against Gardner-Webb, Philo threw for 373 yards and a touchdown on a 75% completion percentage.

If Philo can deliver a solid, consistent level of play, the Gators can compete in the SEC.
