Oregon has added Sacramento State to its 2028 football schedule in a Sept. 9 matchup, according to Oregon Athletics. Oregon and Baylor mutually canceled their home-and-home series meant to begin in 2027; this matchup fills that hole.

Sacramento State joined the Mid-American Conference as a football-only member on July 1, 2026, and will play its first season in the Football Bowl Subdivision this year.

Sacramento State was previously a part of the Big Sky Conference, where it won the conference in 2021 and 2022. Last season, the Hornets went 7-5 and 5-3 in conference play.

The Hornets will really test themselves early in their third season at the FBS level, heading to the always rowdy Autzen Stadium to face the Ducks for the first time.

The Hornets will round out the Ducks’ 2028 non-conference schedule, joining Oregon State and fellow FBS newcomer North Dakota State.

North Dakota State Provides Early Test for Oregon

Also joining the FBS ranks this year, North Dakota State will mark Oregon’s first home test of the season. While NDSU still has a lot to prove as an FBS program, the Bison were a dynasty at the Football Championship Subdivision level.

Hailing from the Missouri Valley Conference, they won 10 FCS championships from 2011-24, and are no stranger to delivering some of the sport’s most memorable upsets, including a 23-21 win over No. 13 Iowa in 2016.

The Bison officially joined the Mountain West Conference on July 1, 2026, joining teams like New Mexico and UNLV.

This will be the two programs’ first time facing off against one another.

The ‘Civil War’ rivalry returns in 2028

The Ducks will hit the road on Sept. 16 to face the Oregon State Beavers in a rivalry renewed. The “Civil War” will resume in 2028 after a two-year hiatus. Due to Oregon’s move to the Big Ten and other scheduling conflicts, the rivalry is on pause for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Oregon State’s program faltered after conference realignment. The Beavers and Washington State were the only two teams left in the Pac-12 conference before another wave of realignment brought the likes of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State.

Oregon has won the last three meetings and leads the all-time series 70-49, including 10 ties. In the 2025 season, Oregon destroyed a dwindling Beaver squad in a 41-7 win. That game saw current Ducks quarterback Dante Moore throw for 305 yards and four touchdowns.

Oregon’s 2028 schedule is now complete, filled with “Group of 6” members in the non-conference, while its conference schedule features road trips to Indiana and Penn State and home tilts against USC and Washington.
