Luke Wafle has emerged as a centerpiece of USC football’s significant investment in high school recruiting. Now, ahead of USC’s highly anticipated matchup against Oregon, the freshman defensive end is already drawing a bold comparison to Aidan Hutchinson.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that two coaches recently spoke with The Athletic about Wafle on the condition of anonymity, allowing them to provide candid assessments of an opponent. One of those coaches was particularly impressed by what he saw from the freshman defensive end.
“He can be special,” the coach said. “When we got out there, and I saw him, I thought there’s no way he’s a true freshman. He looks like a fifth-year senior. He is so hard to block.”

During the conversation, an offensive line coach who faced USC earlier this season took the praise a step further by comparing Wafle to Hutchinson.
“He reminds me of Aidan Hutchinson,” the coach said. “I’m not sure if he’s quite as twitchy, but he’s so big and long. He’s gonna be real good.”
Wafle finished the 2026 recruiting cycle as a consensus five-star prospect and earned the No. 1 overall ranking in the nation from Rivals.com. Before committing to USC, Wafle narrowed his college choices to three programs, with USC, Ohio State, and Penn State remaining in consideration.
After enrolling early at USC during the spring of 2026, Wafle quickly established himself as a starting-caliber player and earned a starting role by fall camp. The highly touted freshman wasted little time showing why he was regarded as one of the nation’s top recruits.
Through the first four games of the 2026 season, Wafle has recorded 15 total tackles. Although he has yet to register his first collegiate sack, the freshman has already established himself as a disruptive presence along the edge of USC’s defensive front.
Even before arriving at USC, Wafle had already demonstrated his ability to make an impact against the run while also showing significant potential as a pass rusher. During his senior season, he recorded 99 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, and 23 sacks.
