According to a college football insider, Texas A&M football has declined Texas Tech's offer to schedule a non-conference contest for the foreseeable future.
With the SEC's transition to a nine-game conference schedule and the College Football Playoff's current tendency to favor total wins over win quality, it doesn't make sense for the Aggies to rekindle the old Big 12 rivalry with the Red Raiders at this time.
In an interview with On3 Sports, head coach Joey McGuire told Brett McMurphy that Texas Tech has reached out to everybody and anybody to schedule a non-conference matchup in 2027 and beyond. The responses from other schools have been the same as the Aggies — a resounding no.

While it can be confusing, especially after watching Texas Tech fall flat on its face against Oregon in last season's College Football Playoff, there is no benefit for SEC schools to schedule the Red Raiders, especially with the adaptation to a more difficult schedule starting in 2026. The Aggies are slated for a home-and-home series against Arizona State (2026 and 2027) and Louisville (2028 and 2029) over the next four seasons.
Alas, this is another result of the current college football landscape and its impact on the sport as a whole. Texas Tech's lack of success in searching for non-conference opponents is due in large part to programs like Texas A&M boasting already difficult schedules, but the NIL era and controversy surrounding the university in recent months could also have played a major role in the outcomes.
