Michigan heads into fall camp set at quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class, with four-star dual-threat Kamden Lopati among the headliners for the Wolverines this cycle. That has given Kyle Whittingham, Jason Beck and Koy Detmer Jr., among other assistant coaches, an early start on 2028 quarterbacks, as the position will certainly be a heavy focus this fall once game-day visits are underway.
Here are three quarterbacks on the board to know and where the Wolverines currently stand.
Jayden Wade
- School: Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy
- Height/Weight: 6-foot-3.5, 195 pounds
- 247Sports Rankings: No. 2 overall, No. 2 QB, No. 1 in Florida
- Rivals Rankings: No. 32 overall, No. 3 QB, No. 4 in Florida
- Other Notable Offers: Georgia (Committed)
- Michigan Visits: N/A
The Skinny: This November will mark the one-year anniversary of Wade’s commitment to Georgia. However, that has yet to stop Michigan from reaching out on a regular basis to the IMG Academy star. Detmer is leading the charge in the flip attempt ever since 2028 prospects were able to communicate directly with coaches on June 15. Whittingham is also involved in this recruitment. There isn’t a finalized period that Wade will visit for the first time as of right now, with the quarterback scheduled to only be in Athens this season. Still, the Wolverines are refusing to leave a stone unturned in the chance to have that visit to Ann Arbor occur before the end of the year.
Tristin Gaines
- School: Waller (Tex.) High
- Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 185 pounds
- 247Sports Rankings: No. 20 QB, No. 32 in Texas
- Rivals Rankings: No. 86 overall, No. 8 QB, No. 10 in Texas
- Other Notable Offers: Texas Tech, Florida, Houston, Baylor, TCU
- Michigan Visits: N/A
The Skinny: Detmer wasted little time establishing a connection with Gaines this summer. That work is already paying off, as Gaines is eyeing dates to fly up to catch a game this fall. He told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong ($) last month the Wolverines are one of five Power 4 programs standing out, along with Oregon and Texas Tech. His trip to The Big House has not been scheduled just yet, but the building blocks for Michigan to be in the mix until the very end is noticeable.
Jamar Howard
- School: Clovis (Calif.) West
- Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 205 pounds
- 247Sports Rankings: No. 28 QB, No. 31 in California
- Rivals Rankings: No. 33 QB, No. 24 in California
- Other Notable Offers: BYU, Kentucky, UNC, Ole Miss, UCLA
- Michigan Visits: 3/27/26, 9/26/26
The Skinny: Howard narrowed his list of schools down to 12 recently, with Michigan making the cut. He’s coming off a spring visit to Ann Arbor a few months ago and is slated to return Sept. 26 for the game against Iowa. Howard has been on the record more than once talking about Michigan being one of the schools he hears from the most; SMU is another team conducting a similar effort. He didn’t go as far to say “dream school” when talking about the Wolverines, but the opportunity to play in The Big House has weighed heavily on his mind.
