A coroner's report has revealed the cause of death for former college football player Jack Pugh. The 24-year-old died on March 30. Officials confirmed the details nearly five months later.

He played tight end for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2021 to 2023. Limited action marked his time on the field. He redshirted one season and appeared in just one game.

Pugh medically retired before the 2023 season. He cited prolonged depression and substance abuse in a public post. Football did not cause the issues, he explained. Life distractions kept him from prioritizing mental health.

He wrote that he deserved a better life and wanted to find happiness. The university later confirmed he earned his degree from UW-Madison in 2025.

"My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up," he wrote at the time. "Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness.

"In no way was football the root of these problems, but everything in my life had distracted me for so long to the point I didn't want to be alive for years. I never had prioritized my mental health all along, digging a deeper darker hole."

The Franklin County Coroner's Office listed acute bronchopneumonia as the official cause. This bacterial or viral lung infection inflames the airways. It developed as a consequence of cardiomyopathy.

Cardiomyopathy weakens or thickens the heart muscle. The report also noted hepatosplenomegaly. That condition enlarges both the liver and spleen.

These details paint a picture of serious underlying problems. The infection proved fatal in combination with the heart condition. No public statement had previously explained the medical factors.

Jack Pugh faced intense pressure that affected his mental well-being. This case highlights how depression can build over the years. Substance abuse often compounds the struggle.

He chose to walk away while still young. The decision prioritized long-term health over continuing to play. Supporters praised the honesty in his announcement at the time.

The delayed release of the coroner findings has renewed attention. Young athletes sometimes hide symptoms while chasing success. This situation shows the importance of early intervention. Support systems on campus can make a real difference.

The family and university continue to mourn the loss. His story serves as a reminder about the hidden challenges many face. Mental health and physical conditions often connect in complex ways.
