Michigan’s relentless effort to lock down top-tier trench talent in the 2028 recruiting cycle took a massive leap forward on Thursday.
Orem (Utah) four-star offensive tackle Mataio Fano (@FanoTaio) confirmed that he is planning an official game-day visit to Ann Arbor when the Wolverines host the Oklahoma Sooners on September 12th.
Checking in at 6-foot-4.5 and 235 pounds, Fano is widely regarded as one of the most gifted, projection-heavy offensive line prospects in the country. According to 247Sports, Fano ranks as the No. 22 overall prospect nationally, the No. 2 offensive tackle, and the No. 2 player in Utah for the 2028 class.

Pedigree and Scouting Breakdown
Fano’s recruitment carries heavy weight not just because of his blue-chip status, but because of his elite athletic background. He comes from a decorated football family in the state of Utah. His oldest brother, Logan Fano, signed with BYU before becoming a three-year starter at Utah. His middle brother, Spencer Fano, was a top-50 national recruit in the 2023 cycle and is widely projected as a prospective first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins noted in his evaluation that Mataio boasts a long, lean frame with plenty of room to add good weight, drawing direct physical comparisons to his brother Spencer at the same stage of development. Biggins praised Fano as a natural athlete who features:
-Exceptional feet, balance, and elite lateral mobility.
-Highly coordinated movement and superior body control.
-Advanced technique, patient pass sets, and an on-balance foundation.
Already selected to both the Navy All-American Bowl roster and the Adidas Polynesian Bowl roster, Fano represents the exact caliber of athletic tackle Michigan seeks for its offensive system.
The Jim Harding Connection
While Utah, UCLA, Alabama, and Arizona remain firmly in the mix, Michigan’s key advantage lies in offensive line coach Jim Harding. Harding was instrumental in developing Spencer Fano into a early-round NFL prospect during their shared time in the Pac-12/Big 12 footprint.
That deep family trust, paired with Michigan’s proven track record of developing elite offensive linemen and producing Joe Moore Award-caliber units, has given the Wolverines tremendous early momentum.
A Massive Game-Day Weekend
Getting Fano on campus for the September 12 matchup against Oklahoma gives Michigan a premier stage to showcase the Big House atmosphere. Bringing in a player of Fano’s caliber early in his high school career underscores the Wolverines' ambition to establish an unbeatable frontline anchor for years to come.
