One of the biggest games on the early college football schedule is already getting the national spotlight.
ESPN’s “College GameDay” will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, for the Week 3 showdown between No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 11 LSU on Sept. 19, giving an already fascinating SEC matchup an even bigger stage. On3 shared the announcement Friday, weeks before the Rebels and Tigers are scheduled to meet at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
There are plenty of reasons for ESPN to make its decision this early. Both teams enter the season with College Football Playoff expectations, but the biggest storyline will be impossible to ignore: LSU coach Lane Kiffin is returning to Oxford to face Ole Miss after leaving the Rebels for the Tigers following last season. That should make for one of the most anticipated “College GameDay” atmospheres of the entire season.

College GameDay Is Heading To Oxford For LSU-Ole Miss
On3 announced Friday that “College GameDay” will be in Oxford for the Week 3 meeting between LSU and Ole Miss.
ESPN subsequently confirmed the destination with an announcement of its own.
“Well … since you asked,” the show’s official account wrote before revealing it would be heading to Oxford.
The decision means “College GameDay” will begin the 2026 season with three consecutive shows from SEC campuses. The show is scheduled to visit Baton Rouge in Week 1 before traveling to Austin for Week 2 and Oxford for Week 3.
The LSU-Ole Miss matchup is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
But this isn’t simply another ranked SEC matchup.
Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Return Adds Another Layer
Kiffin’s return will be one of the most closely watched coaching storylines of the 2026 college football season.
The current LSU coach spent six seasons at Ole Miss and transformed the Rebels into a national contender. His final team reached the College Football Playoff, but Kiffin’s departure for LSU created a dramatic ending to his tenure in Oxford.
Defensive coordinator Pete Golding ultimately took over the Ole Miss program.
Now Kiffin won’t have to wait long to face his former team.
The preseason rankings only add to the significance. Ole Miss enters at No. 9 in the AP poll, while LSU is No. 11. An early victory could provide either program with an important résumé piece in the race for the SEC championship and College Football Playoff.
For Kiffin, however, this one will carry a different level of attention.
He will walk back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium as the opposing head coach only months after leaving the program he helped elevate into a playoff contender.
ESPN apparently doesn’t need to see how the first two weeks unfold to know how compelling that scene could be.
LSU-Ole Miss Could Be One Of College Football’s Biggest September Games
The Magnolia Bowl already brings considerable history to the schedule. LSU and Ole Miss have played more than 100 times, creating one of the SEC’s longest-running rivalries.
The 2026 edition now has almost everything a September college football game could offer: two preseason top-15 teams, conference implications, potential playoff ramifications and a former head coach returning to face the program he left behind.
Add the “College GameDay” crew and what should be a charged Oxford crowd, and Sept. 19 suddenly looks like one of the dates to circle on the early-season calendar.
ESPN made that clear weeks before kickoff.
“College GameDay” is going to Oxford, and Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss will be at the center of the college football world.
