Ex Aggies QB Named Georgia Southern Starter Entering 7th College Football Season

Max Johnson’s college football journey still isn’t finished.
The former Texas A&M quarterback has reportedly been named Georgia Southern’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season, giving the seventh-year veteran another chance to reclaim a career that has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries and crowded quarterback rooms.

Johnson is expected to start the Eagles’ opener against Charleston Southern.
That alone makes this one of the more fascinating quarterback stories in college football.
Johnson has already played at LSU, Texas A&M and North Carolina. He transferred to Chapel Hill before the 2024 season, but a fractured femur wrecked much of his opportunity with the Tar Heels.
Over the last two years, he missed 19 games and managed just 432 passing yards and two touchdowns last season.
Now he gets a reset.
Georgia Southern offers something Johnson badly needed: a real path to QB1.
His resume is far more substantial than the recent numbers suggest. Johnson has thrown for 6,355 career yards, 49 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions across his college career.
At Texas A&M, he was caught in one of the messiest quarterback battles of the Jimbo Fisher era.
Johnson competed alongside Haynes King and Connor Weigman, eventually getting more opportunities in 2023. That season, he threw for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns before both he and Fisher moved on from College Station.
King later became a major playmaker at Georgia Tech, while Weigman continued his own winding college path.
Johnson’s route has been even more complicated.
He made just one appearance for North Carolina in 2024 before the femur injury derailed his season, and by 2026 the Tar Heels’ quarterback room had again become crowded.
So Johnson moved on.
At this point, this isn’t about hype. It’s about opportunity.
He’s experienced, he’s been through multiple systems, and he’s taken enough hits – literally and figuratively – to know how quickly a season can change.

If Johnson stays healthy, Georgia Southern could be getting a quarterback with far more big-game experience than most Sun Belt teams will face.
For a player who’s spent years fighting for another chance, that may be all he needs.
