Norfolk State head coach Michael Vick has identified his QB1 for the start of the HBCU football season. Vick is set to go with former Ole Miss quarterback Deljay Bailey after an interesting training camp that featured a QB competition among the roster.
He announced the decision during Monday’s MEAC coaches’ call.
“Yeah, Deljay Bailey is our starter.”

He discussed that the decision was the result of the quarterback competition during training camp, where Bailey had competition from Reggie Johnson, a talented transfer junior quarterback from San Diego Mesa. It put up big numbers in the 2025 season. Johnson joined Vick at MEAC Media Day in July, which appeared to be the nod that he would become the starter for the Spartans in year two of Vick’s tenure, but per Vick, things changed during practice.
“It was very competitive. It was open competition at every position,” Vick said. “And there were no set starters…Unfortunately right now, he’s not our starting quarterback. It was, like I said, competition based, and somebody was able to surpass him based on the understanding, based on the production, based on the output.”
Bailey started his college career at Ole Miss as a redshirt before transferring to Grambling State University in 2024. He appeared in seven games for the Tigers, throwing for 440 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He was able to see the field against Bethune-Cookman, where he had his best game with Grambling State, throwing for 206 yards and running for a touchdown.
He then left Grambling for Itawamba Community College last season. Throwing for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns on 68.6% completion, he turned in his best outing of the stretch against Holmes Community College, where he threw three touchdown passes.
He now joins a Norfolk State program that’s actively looking for the next quarterback to lead the team, following a back-and-forth battle between Otto Khuns and Israel Carter last season. Khuns ultimately earned the upper hand as the starting quarterback before a season-ending injury against North Carolina Central in early November.
Norfolk State gears up to host Winston-Salem State University on Saturday at 6 p.m. EST.
