Iowa is built for ugly football, but that does not mean every ugly game is comfortable.
The Hawkeyes’ Nov. 7 road trip to Northwestern has all the ingredients of a matchup that could frustrate Kirk Ferentz’s team.
It will likely be cold, physical and low-scoring. It may not look pretty on television or command national headlines, but it could quietly become one of the most pivotal swing games on Iowa’s schedule.
CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford identified Northwestern as Iowa’s biggest trap game precisely because the matchup mirrors the exact style the Hawkeyes use to drag opponents into discomfort.
“Both teams prefer winning ugly, and the likelihood of poor weather in Evanston this late in the season is high,” Crawford wrote.

That is exactly why Iowa cannot afford to take the Wildcats lightly. Northwestern does not need an explosive shootout to make this game dangerous.
Instead, Wildcats coach David Braun’s team needs to shorten the game, win the field-position battle, force a timely turnover and make the Hawkeyes execute under pressure in the fourth quarter.
“Road games against the Wildcats are rarely pretty, and their physical, low-scoring style mirrors the type of matchup Iowa has played for years,” Crawford wrote.
For Iowa, the concern is straightforward. The Hawkeyes should hold the edge along the line of scrimmage, and their defense is typically disciplined enough to control the tempo.
A sluggish offensive start, however, can alter the entire complexion of the afternoon. If Northwestern hangs around into the second half, the pressure shifts entirely to an Iowa offense that has rarely been built to erase multi-possession deficits or score in a hurry.

That is why Iowa must avoid letting this matchup turn into a fourth-quarter coin flip. The Hawkeyes are comfortable winning 13-10, but they cannot afford to hand Northwestern that exact same script.
Keep the Wildcats within one score late, and the margin for error vanishes completely.
