Paramount+ announces Sept. 4 premiere for ‘The Program: Texas Tech’ docuseries

If there was ever a year to do a docuseries about Texas Tech football, this is probably it. So, good timing on Paramount+’s part.
The streaming service announced Thursday that The Program: Texas Tech, a four-part docuseries about the Red Raiders football program, will premiere on Friday, September 4.
The series is expected to give “unprecedented access into the Texas Tech University Red Raiders College Football Program – including exclusive interviews with head coach Joey McGuire, former quarterback Brendan Sorsby, Chairman of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents Cody Campbell, and more – through one of the most consequential off-seasons in the history of the sport.”
They’re not kidding on that last part. Texas Tech has been making noise in recent years, thanks in large part to the rise of booster and Texas Tech University System Board of Regents chair Cody Campbell. Under head coach Joey McGuire, the program won its first Big 12 title and earned a coveted berth in the College Football Playoff. It then became the center of a firestorm over Sorsby, who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after he placed thousands of bets on sporting events. Texas Tech fought the NCAA’s decision, and a Texas judge granted Sorsby an injunction, allowing him to play, much to the chagrin of just about everyone else in college football, including the Big 12. The whole episode led many other schools to announce they would not schedule Texas Tech. Eventually, Sorsby applied for the NFL supplemental draft, but the NFL opted not to hold one this year. And now, the Red Raiders enter the 2026 season a favorite to win the Big 12 but also as the sport’s biggest villain.
All of which is to say is that it will be very interesting to see how the docuseries handles all of this. Will it let the facts speak, or will it give Texas Tech a chance to sway the narrative in its favor? Given the state of sports documentaries these days, we can probably assume the answer, but it’s still a compelling reason to check out the series.
