With NFL Cut Deadline Looming, Titans Still Have Undecided Position Battles

The Tennessee Titans are closing in on the 53-man roster deadline this weekend in the NFL. 

All teams must have trimmed their 90-man roster down to 53 players on Sunday at 5 p.m. CT. 

The Titans will have a new player starting at multiple positions this year. The two obvious position battles have been on the offensive line. 

Center Lloyd Cushenberry and right guard Kevin Zeitler are no longer on the team. There's been a battle at center between Andre James, Austin Schlottmann and Pat Coogan. 

The battle at right guard has consisted of Fernando Carmona, Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater. Carmona has started the last two preseason games at right guard and may be close to securing a starting role. 

There have been other battles like the one for the No. 3 running back. Robert Saleh said earlier this offseason that Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears were going to be the bell cows. 

This leaves a question mark behind them. 

Nicholas Singleton, Julius Chestnut, Michael Carter, D'Ernest Johnson and Kalel Mullings are all on the 90-man roster. 

Those aren't the only position battles taking place with the Titans. Titans Assistant General Manager Dave Ziegler took the podium before Thursday's joint practice and said there are a handful of open jobs with the final preseason game on the horizon. 

"Oh man, it would be tough for me to put a specific number on it, but I would say, you know, there are, you know, there's a handful of jobs that are still up for grabs that we're going to evaluate. That's a big week for some guys here in this joint practice and in the game. And then we'll see where it shakes out." 

The Titans are seeing the Chicago Bears for the first time since the 2024 season opener on Saturday night. The Titans had a solid first half, but then it all fell apart. 

After going up 17-0 in the first half, the Titans let the Bears score 24 consecutive points. The Bears didn't score an offensive touchdown in the second half but still won 24-17. 

The Bears are coming off a solid first season under head coach Ben Johnson. After winning five games in 2024, the Bears went 11-6 and won their division. 

The Titans are hoping for a similar result with Robert Saleh in his first season. 

The preseason wraps up Saturday at Nissan Stadium at 5 p.m. CT on NFL Network.
