With the Clemson football team getting ready for the regular season, as the opener is right around the corner, there could be fans wondering who will be the definitive starting quarterback in Week 1 on Sept. 5 against LSU. As Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney looks to finalize his pick, this insider would give insight into the decision likely to be made.
According to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, “the expectation remains” that Christopher Vizzina will be the Week 1 starter for the Tigers, as he’s reportedly taken every first-team snap in practice. With hype around freshman Tait Reynolds, Nakos would note that with a “strong show” in the offseason, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him get some playing time, even more as the season progresses.”
“Sources have told On3 in recent days that Christopher Vizzina has taken nearly every snap with the first-team offense in practice, and the expectation remains that he will start Week 1 for Clemson at LSU,” Nakos wrote. “Reynolds has pushed him, and how Game One goes for Clemson will be key for the quarterback position moving forward.”

It shouldn’t be surprising to see Vizzina being the starter to begin the 2026 season for the Clemson football program, as Swinney has spoken like it was to be the case for a while. Speaking on July 16 at ACC Kickoff, he praised Vizzina, saying that he’s “earned the opportunity” to start.
“CV earned the opportunity to be the starting quarterback at Clemson based on everything we’ve observed,” Swinney said, according to Sports Illustrated. “If we didn’t think he was good enough or he hadn’t demonstrated the things he could control at that point in his career, we might have made another decision.”
Vizzina has started one game for the Tigers, coming in for the injured Cade Klubnik on Oct. 18 in the 35-24 loss to SMU, where he threw for 317 yards, completing 29 of his 42 pass attempts with three touchdowns. At any rate, it remains to be seen how the senior plays when the season comes around on Sept. 5 against LSU.
